NUJS-SILP's Town Hall Session with Lord Meghnad Desai

The 1st Town Hall Session organised by the NUJS-Society of International Law and Policy witnessed a dialogue between British economist and a member of the House of Lords Lord Meghnad Desai and the student body on a wide range of issues including, but not limited to Economics, Brexit, Indian and International politics, Secularism etc.



Lord Meghnad Desai is a member of the House of Lords from the Labour Party. He has the distinction of being the first non-UK born candidate to stand for the position of the Lord Speaker in the House of Lords. He has authored a number of books such as Marxian Economic Theory,Applied Econometrics, Testing Monetarism, Marx’s Revenge: The Resurgence of Capitalism and the Death of Statist Socialism etc. He is also a contributor to several eminent Indian publications such as the Indian Express, the Business Standard and the Financial Express. He the distinction of being awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India, in 2008.


The session witnessed Lord Meghnad Desai engaging with the audience on a variety of topics including the politics of economic reservations, GST, waiver of farmer's loans, scottish referendum, policies on taking in refugees, the Kashmir crisis among other things.
