NUJS appears before Joint Parliamentary Committee to present Report on the Revised Draft of PDP Bill

We are proud to announce that Mr. Agnidipto Tarafder, on behalf of the Kautilya Society, NUJS appeared before the Joint Parliamentary Committee to present the Society’s Report on the Revised Draft of the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019.

The Kautilya Society was started as a forum for promoting students’ engagement with policy making, in association with the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy. The Society endeavours to increase student participation in legislative processes towards the making of better laws.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee, chaired by Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi, invited comments on the Bill from stakeholders concerned. The members of the Society - Siddharth Sonkar, Rohit Gupta, Asees Kaur and Akshay Luhadia, under the supervision of Faculty Advisor, Mr. Agnidipto Tarafder, sent it's submissions, with a request for a personal appearance before the committee to present it's views, in February this year. The Comments can be accessed here.

Despite the delay during the pandemic, the committee acceded to this request. On 16th October 2020, Mr. Agnidipto Tarafder appeared before the committee, and his testimony went on for almost three hours and was duly recorded.

This is an extremely proud moment for the Society and NUJS, as NUJS is the only academic institution to be heard by the Committee. We congratulate the Kautilya Society for their achievement and wish them the very best for all their future endeavours!
