NUJS'12 alumna awarded Columbia Law School's Human Rights Fellowship (2018-19)

In a significant academic recognition, Ms. Darshana Mitra from the Class of 2012 has joined Columbia Law School's LL.M. Human Right Fellowship Program. She is one among the nine Human Rights fellows from across the world who was chosen for her zeal and vision to bring about positive change to the world recognised by the university. The 2018-19 LL.M. Human Right Fellowship Program is part of Columbia Law School's commitment to educate human rights advocates and scholars. It aims at the annual recruitment and awarding of fellowships to top jurists with extraordinary potential in the field of international human rights who wish to further develop their legal skills and expertise by pursuing a one-year Master of Laws degree. This year’s fellows hail from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, India, South Africa, and New Zealand. The two scholars selected from India for pursuing the program are Ms. Darshana Mitra an alumna of the National University of Juridical Sciences and Ms. Meher Dev an alumna of Jindal Global Law School, Sonipat. At NUJS, Ms. Darshana Mitra volunteered with the NUJS Legal Aid Society where she conducted workshops for domestic workers and performed street plays to promote domestic violence awareness. She credited the volunteering work to have played a role in sparking her interest in community-based lawyering. Darshana is known for her association with Alternate Law Forum where she represented African students whose passports were illegally seized and helped them file complaints with the police, traveled across India to interview human rights lawyers to document their role in the history of her country and worked extensively with vulnerable populations including sex workers and Muslim Bangladeshi immigrants (Source: Website, Columbia Law School).
