Statement of Solidarity
THE NLU STUDENTS’ CONSORTIUM CONDEMNS THE MUZZLING OF STUDENT PROTESTS IN JNU AND STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE NATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST IN DEFENCE OF AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE EDUCATION
The NLU Students’ Consortium expresses collective resentment and outrage over the muzzling down of student protests against the fee hike at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. At the outset, we express our grief over the commodification of education even at this prestigious university which has had iconic student movements and has produced alumni who’ve made a mark.
Fear is an antithesis to creative learning and we condemn the administrative actions aimed at mauling down the protests by the students aggrieved by the fee hikes. Such unwarranted fee hikes and undesired administrative actions are turning quality education inaccessible to relatively weaker sections. We understand the plight of the students and we condemn the administration and the government machinery for the undemocratic policies and the sheer insensitivity with which the reasonable demands of the students are being shoved away.
We respect the perseverance and the resilience of the JNU Student Community for being vocal about the injustice and we extend out solidarity to the struggle by the JNU Students to safeguard JNU and for the protection of access to education.
We take this opportunity to express our protest against commodification of education and fear mongering by administrations across even the National Universities and Institutes including NLUs. We, as students of National Law Universities, can empathize with this cause, as we have experienced a good deal deal of elitism in education as well, owing to the exorbitant fee structures common to every NLU, making NLUs affordable only to the financial elite. We strongly oppose privatisation and commodification of education across the myriad fields of educational pursuit across the nation and we express our solidarity to the National Day of Protest in Defence of Affordable and Accessible Education. We genuinely appreciate this initiative by JNU and we acknowledge and support this cause.
More Power to Students!!
