In an unfortunate news, former Chief Justice of India Altmas Kabir passed away this morning in Kolkata at the age of 68 years. He was not keeping well since some time and passed away after a spell of prolonged illness.
Born in Calcutta in 1948, Kabir started his career in the field of law in 1973 as an advocate practicing in the Calcutta High Court. He was appointed as a permanent judge to the Calcutta High Court in August 1990 and then became the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court in March 2005. He was later elevated to the Supreme Court, following which he was named the Chief Justice of India in September 2012. He held the office for 292 days till his retirement on July 18, 2013.
Kabir was particularly known for playing a key role in issues related to human rights and election laws. As a Chair Professor of Human Rights at NUJS, his contribution towards human rights scholariship and jurisprudence has been immense. He was a brilliant lecturer and a beloved teacher to many a students.
His death is a great loss to the NUJS family. His absence shall leave a huge void in the lives of the students and members of the faculty alike.
