The 62nd session of the Informal Discussion Group (IDG) witnessed a dialogue between noted author and social activist Ms. Arundhati Roy and the student body on the theme “The Role and Responsibilities of a Writer in Today’s India”.
Ms. Arundhati Roy is world-renowned for her book 'The God of Small Things'. She has won numerous awards, including the Man Booker prize, the Sydney Peace prize, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Norman Mailer Prize. She had also featured in the 2014 list of Time 100, the 100 most influential people in the world among many other accomplishments and accolades. Recently her book 'The Ministry of Utmost Hapiness' was longlisted for the Man Booker prize.
The session witnessed Ms. Arundhati Roy engaging with the audience on a variety of topics including her run-ins with the legal system,the problem of accessing courts still faced by oppressed sections of the society, the politics of court procedures and the intersection of personal and political writings. "I don't write thinking I am going to change the society. There is something deeper and more profound than a simple aim like that" she said during her address. The address and the question and answer session were then followed by a book signing session by the author.
We thank Ms. Arundhati Roy for taking time out of her busy schedule to engage with us and it was indeed an honour for the university to play host.
